It's because that game is very close to impossible to make. And that's not because the developers sucked, or betrayed some obscure idea of trust. There has been a million games in development that aimed to create the gameplay from Dwarf Fortress with 3d graphics and a less hostile user interface. Game development, on anything more than pure hobby scale, is incredibly expensive compared to the chance of an ROI that makes it possible to keep working. But it has always been that way, and always will. But people that don't know the process wrongly assume that cut features and half finished products going gold is somehow a new phenomenon, and start treating it like it's some gruesome betrayal. It has always been like that, and if there has been any change, it has actually gotten better.

There's an army of pissy people on this subreddit that always come out of the woodwork to downvote whenever Stonehearth is mentioned, usually because it never got a Mac version, but the fact of the matter is that not only is it the most well made and fully featured 3d Dwarf Fortress based game available, but it's also a kind of game that is incredibly difficult, from a technical perspective, to make.įeatures get cut in all games, since we moved past Pong, but since a lot of the industry changed to a more open development model recently, people that have no first hand knowledge suddenly noticed it. Or there was, but they've all been abandoned. It improves a LOT of the issues and adds a ton of content.Īs for similar games, there really aren't any.

I love everything about Dwarf Fortress conceptually, especially the wacky text events it's famous for, but I'm a pretty shallow guy and the "graphics" really kill me, even with the mods that make it look all modern and sleek.įor Stonehearth, remember to grab the official community mod/expansion. What's the most similar game out there? Particularly I really like the 3D environment and the options of pre-built or custom built buildings, coupled with the skill systems (although Stonehearth's skill system is woefully underdeveloped and the building system is buggy as hell). Between bugs, bad optimization, and a general unfinished feel, it's just not quite there.

The only problem is that it's pretty much deader than dead since Riot Games bought out Radiant.

I recently rediscovered Stonehearth in my library, and it's got so much going for it! It's pretty much exactly what I've looked for. Couldn't get into Dwarf Fortress for the typical reasons, but I've got a couple hundred hours in RimWorld, and I've sampled a number of other games that didn't quite hit the right itch. Hey y'all, I'm a pretty big fan of these kinds of games.
